General Information

Music is a language that communicates the joy and hope of Christian life!

“God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song. God dwells within each human person, in the place where music takes its source. Indeed, God, the giver of song, is present whenever his people sing his praises.”  ~ Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship, 2007 revision.

Here at St Elizabeth Ann Seton, we blend music with spiritual commitment to create a powerful experience in our worship. Whether we sing well or can’t carry a tune, singing praise and making music to God is the privilege and duty of all. It is the joining of our voices and God-given abilities that is important. When we assemble for worship, singing of spiritual songs forms our personal faith and allows us to express together our common praise and thanks, our Spirit-guided hopes and aspirations, and our profound love of God and each other.

“Those who sing pray twice.” ~ St. Augustine

Music is a sign of God’s love for us and of our love for him. Expressing prayer through music can be both rewarding and challenging. Hard work, dedication, helpful instruction, and balanced exposure to music of many styles and levels of difficulty are beneficial, enjoyable, and above all ministerial to the faithful.

The primary purpose of the SEAS music ministry is to enable the full, active participation of all present within the liturgy. The choir’s singing and the instruments playing songs, hymns, refrains and acclamations are geared toward supporting, leading and enhancing the song of the whole church without detracting from the focus of the liturgy. It is inspiring when the church, assembled for worship, takes ownership of the music knowing that even imperfect voices become part of a whole beautiful sound.

A secondary though important function of the music ministry is to provide music for listening purposes. Instrumental music can communicate beyond words, creating an atmosphere of prayer, celebration, repentance, adoration, meditation or whatever is appropriate. Choral music with its combination of words, voices and musical accompaniment can move the listener (not to mention the singers and instrumentalists) to a higher spiritual plane.

Because we do not serve in this Ministry to display our God-given talents for our own sake, one must have the Latin phrase “Soli Deo Gloria” at the center of their spiritual motivation. This translates to: “To God alone be the Glory.”

Your role in our parish music ministry does not require you to have a strong background in music. A love of music, the desire to praise the Lord in song, an open mind and heart, and commitment are the key elements to a fruitful ministry. We welcome your decision to become a part of our Parish Music Ministry.
